Project goals were to define the vertical and horizontal extent of fuel contamination in soil with direct-push Geoprobe Optical Image Profiler, and to delineate the dissolved-phase hydrocarbon plume by installing additional groundwater monitoring wells and sampling new and existing wells. Additionally, soil samples were collected using the incremental sampling method to assess remaining lead-based paint chips in soil. The goal of this phase of work was delineation of an historical fuel spill. We dug test pits to determine horizontal delineation, removed and stockpiled clean overburden, and sampled the stockpiles. Soils were removed in one-foot lifts until reaching pore water. All soils were screened and sampled with a photo ionization detector using the heated headspace method, and a subset were submitted for laboratory analysis of hydrocarbons. All work was performed in accordance with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and Department of Natural Resources specification. We collected spatial data of all sample points and polygons with a Trimble handheld GPS unit. In the early twentieth century the site served as a depot connecting the Alaska Railroad with barges on the Tanana and Yukon Rivers. Hydrocarbons were detected in groundwater in 2010, presumably from historical activities, and groundwater monitoring has occurred annually since then to monitor contaminant presence and attenuation. We sampled ten flush-mount monitoring wells using low-flow purge and sampling techniques and submitted samples for laboratory analysis, in accordance with Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation guidelines.
